Randi Weingarten’s Dangerous Game

Randi Weingarten is playing a dangerous political game that endangers the future of public education. By signing on to promote the common core standards she is falling into the false narrative that schools are broken and that we have a standards problem. This is clearly not the case. We are at record high NAEP scores for whites, blacks, Hispanics, and Asians. Our non and low poverty students score at the top of international tests. Is there a problem? No. Randi Weingarten is not an evil person. She does lack the ability to deal with our real problem through anything but a political lense.

A recent UNICEF report ranks the US second highest for developed nations in child poverty. We are at 23%. We also have about 40% of African American students in poverty. THERE IS YOUR PROBLEM. Promoting common core and the massive testing that comes with it is malpractice. AFT passed a resolution against high stakes testing but endorsed a President and Secretary of Education who divert billions of dollars to testing. States are using RTTT funds to create tests for Art and Music classes. States are even creating tests for Pre-K and K. Arne Duncan sits by and watches. AFT is still hoping to get a mythical seat at the table. Maybe Clint Eastwood can help with that.

As Condi Rice and Jeb Bush were less than honest about our public schools- the White House was silent and AFT offered tepid retorts. My friends we can do better. Expect no better at the DNC convention. The stats I cite in my blogs should be in a full page AD by AFT. They should be recited at the convention. They will not be.

We can and must do better. We must take action. We must not let others spread a false narrative. Will we act? Will we be silent as others herd us up and silence us?

Do not go gentle into that good night…
