Books are Enough

The Power of Free, Self-Selected Reading

A camel comes to Florida

This was the prompt that Florida 4th graders had to write a timed essay about last year on the state assessment. If you had no idea what a camel was then too bad!

Writing to Tell a Story: The grade 4 narrative prompt directed  students to suppose someone had a chance to ride a camel and to write a story about what happens on this camel ride.

Keep in mind that many Florida students get little time to read books in school due to the skill- drill- kill mandates that exist.  Poor students have little access to books at home.

So what if you have no idea what a camel is? What if I decide to shoot the camel for food and not ride it at all? The prompt says I have a “chance” to ride the camel and then assumes I will.
