The Power of Free, Self-Selected Reading

On Vocabulary: A lesson for all

Today we were doing a guided reading and the word “diverse” appeared. I asked if anyone knew what it meant. One student said, “varied.” I asked the student how they knew that since there were no context clues. The student responded, “Reading books.”

The power of reading. Let’s make sure we stop spending a lot of time “teaching” vocabulary when acquiring it is much more fun and lasting. Encouraging and promoting avid self-selected reading is the best way to help kids be college and LIFE ready.
